06 โ Remote Global Track
Goal: convert the Senior/Principal skill set into global-market compensation โ the fastest legitimate lever to double income from India.
The core principle: Your salary is set by the market that prices your skills, not by your skill level. Indian IT services (EPAM and peers) price frontend work as delivery capacity. Remote-first global product companies price it as product engineering โ and the same 10 years of React / Next.js / TypeScript, design systems, and performance engineering is worth 2โ3ร more in that market. The work is not "getting better"; it is changing which market prices you.
Part 1 โ The comp gap, in one table
| Market | Senior FE (8โ11 yrs) | Your move |
|---|---|---|
| Indian IT services (current) | โน24โ34L fixed | Baseline โ structural ceiling, not a performance issue |
| Indian product company / unicorn | โน45โ65L fixed (+ equity) | +50โ100% |
| Indian GCC (US enterprise) | โน28โ48L cash + RSUs (25โ40% on top) | +30โ70% |
| Remote-first global (India-eligible) | โน60โ90L+ total | +100โ190% โ the doubling lever |
| Contract marketplace (US/EU clients) | $60โ120/hr | Highest $/hr, least stability |
Verified anchor (Aug 2026, levels.fyi): GitLab India โ Senior Software Engineer โน81.5L total comp (base โน69.9L + stock โน11.6L); Intermediate โน70.8L. That single number is your proof that the target is real.
Part 2 โ The company matrix (remote-first, India-eligible, reliable)
Tier 1 โ Remote-first global, proven India hiring
| Company | FE stack fit | Comp model | Reliability signals | Interview signature | Prep focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supabase โญโญ | React + TS (exact fit) | Geo-adjusted bands; Senior $162โ255k (US band; India adjusted) | $5B valuation, ~$70M ARR +250% YoY, fully remote from day one, 4M+ devs | Deep technical + take-home; OSS/public work weighs heavily | Postgres/RAG basics, TS depth, real OSS contribution |
| Automattic โญ | React/JS (Calypso, Woo, Tumblr) | Global-ish, hires from 90 countries | Remote since 2005 โ the most battle-tested remote company alive | Paid trial project (you're paid to collaborate for a trial period) | Written async quality; working in public; WP ecosystem |
| Zapier โญ | React + TS | Location-based bands | Profitable, remote-first, worldwide hiring incl. India | Async collaborative exercises; written clarity | Automation domain, TS, product thinking |
| Grafana Labs โญ | React + TS | Remote bands (EU/UK/US posted); India roles appear periodically | OSS moat, strong funding, remote-first | Coding + system design; OSS contributions count | Observability domain, TS/React depth, dashboards/perf |
| GitLab โญ | Vue (React transfers) | India: Senior โน81.5L / Intermediate โน70.8L total | All-remote, 65+ countries, actively posting India/Bangalore remote roles | Handbook-first async โ written communication is the gate; async interviews | Written memos, Vue basics if targeting FE, DevOps domain |
| Canonical (Ubuntu) | React/TS + Python | Lower cash, global bands, strong benefits | Hires in India continuously for years | Long-form written assessment first, then interviews | Structured writing, Linux/OSS familiarity |
| Deel / Remote.com | React/TS | Location-based | Remote-first by definition; India hiring steady | Standard loops, async-friendly | Domain (global payroll), TS/React |
| MongoDB / Cloudflare / Atlassian / Coinbase / HubSpot / Elastic / DuckDuckGo | React/TS | Mixed; RSU-heavy | Large, stable, post country-eligible roles regularly | Standard + occasional async rounds | System design, RSU literacy, domain |
Tier 2 โ Contract marketplaces (parallel leverage, not primary)
Toptal ยท Arc.dev ยท Turing ยท Gun.io ยท X-Team ยท Proxify โ vet once, get matched to US/EU clients; $60โ120/hr for senior FE. Higher raw rate, no employment stability, no equity. Use to warm up, for leverage, or as a bridge โ and never while employed at EPAM without checking the moonlighting clause (do it as a clean switch).
Tier 3 โ Indian product / GCC (safety net, faster loops)
Razorpay ยท CRED ยท Zerodha ยท Zepto ยท Groww ยท PhonePe ยท Flipkart ยท Swiggy and GCCs (Walmart Global Tech, Goldman Sachs, JPMC, Salesforce, Adobe, Uber India). These pay โน45โ90L, interview in familiar formats, and their loops close in 3โ5 weeks. Run them in parallel โ an Indian offer becomes negotiating leverage for the global offer.
Part 3 โ What remote-global interviewing actually filters for
Remote companies hire for async autonomy, not chair-time. The screen is shifted from live puzzle-solving to written evidence:
- Written communication as the first filter. Applications, take-homes, and written exercises are read closely. GitLab's handbook-first culture and Canonical's essay assessment make this explicit. โ Your Rulebook habits (ADRs, written plans, 10-line discipline) are a direct competitive advantage.
- Take-homes / trial projects. Automattic pays a trial; many use a scoped feature take-home. โ Prep by shipping one polished take-home with tests + a written rationale (Ch. 03 one-pager + Ch. 04 test discipline).
- Public evidence. OSS contributions, public repos, deployed artifacts, technical writing. โ Your deployed apps + this Rulebook + FE-Prep are verifiable artifacts most candidates cannot match.
- Depth in the core, not trivia. React internals (fiber/reconciliation), strict TS (conditional/mapped types, discriminated unions), testing tiers, performance (INP/CWV), design systems, Next.js 15 App Router/caching. โ Covered by Chapters 02โ04 + the FE-Prep site.
- Collaboration signals. Remote code review, documentation, cross-timezone async. โ Name real examples; be specific about how you unblock people asynchronously.
Part 4 โ The 6-week prep sprint
Target set (weighted): 4 React/TS-native (Supabase, Zapier, Automattic, Grafana) ยท 2 Indian product/GCC (Razorpay/CRED/Walmart) ยท 2 stretch (GitLab, Cloudflare/Coinbase) ยท 2 marketplaces (Toptal/Arc) as parallel leverage.
| Week | Focus | Deliverable |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Positioning + artifacts | Resume reframed by band ("Frontend Platform / Design Systems / Performance Lead"); portfolio URL listing deployed apps + rulebook + certs; 10 target list with referral paths |
| 2 | Written-comms drill | 3 technical memos written (bug post-mortem, design proposal, trade-off doc) โ reusable as application artifacts; tailored cover note per target type |
| 3 | Core technical sharpening | React internals, strict TS depth, testing (Vitest/RTL/Playwright), perf/INP, system design for FE at scale (Ch. 02 + FE-Prep "Scale & UX") |
| 4 | Take-home + mocks | One polished take-home (feature + tests + written rationale); 2 mocks (one live-coding, one system-design); Vue basics if targeting GitLab |
| 5 | Applications in waves | Referrals first, then Greenhouse/Ashby direct; 3โ5 parallel processes; Tier-3 Indian loops started for speed and leverage |
| 6 | Negotiation + close | Band questions asked early; competing offers aligned; anchor at 75th percentile; geo-adjustment pushback prepared |
Application mechanics that move response rates:
- Referrals first (10ร response rate vs cold). Find employees/ex-employees on LinkedIn; remote companies usually have public referral channels.
- Apply on the company's own board (Greenhouse/Ashby) โ aggregators add delay and drop location metadata.
- Match the location line: many roles are country-scoped. Apply to "India" or "Remote โ Worldwide" postings only; don't burn a referral on an ineligible role.
- Timing: remote loops run 4โ8 weeks; start by week 5 of the sprint so offers land inside the 6-month window.
Part 5 โ Negotiating a remote offer (India-specific)
- Ask for the band before naming a number: "What's the range for this level?" then anchor at the 75th percentile with your artifacts as the justification.
- Geo-adjustment is negotiable-ish. If a band feels India-adjusted, counter with scope (system ownership, on-call, design-system/platform lead) and with a competing offer โ not with "cost of living."
- Value RSU vs cash honestly: listed-company RSU โ near face value; private ESOP ร 0.35 until liquidity is announced. A "โน75L with heavy ESOP" can be worth โน50L real.
- Contractor vs employee: marketplaces pay gross hourly (no PF/insurance/equity) โ compare real value, not headline rate. Employment at a remote-first company usually wins long-term.
- Two offers = a market; one offer = a wish. Run Tier-1 and Tier-3 pipelines in parallel so the global offer is negotiated against a real alternative.
- Get it in writing: fixed/variable split, joining bonus clawback, vesting schedule/cliff, location band and its review cadence.
Part 6 โ Honest caveats
- Not every remote role is India-eligible โ always read the posting's location filter before investing in a loop.
- Geo-adjusted bands mean India comp is often below the US band (but still โน60โ90L for senior โ the doubling is real).
- Async cultures demand written output. If you dislike writing, start the Week-2 drill now; it's the actual gate.
- No dual employment. Clear the EPAM moonlighting clause question by making this a clean switch, not a side hustle.
- Company reliability matters: check funding/layoff history (Supabase, GitLab, Zapier, Automattic, Grafana, Canonical are all established); a marketplace contract has no such safety net.
โ The remote-track checklist
- 10 targets chosen and weighted (React/TS-native ร4, Indian product ร2, stretch ร2, marketplace ร2)
- Resume reframed by band; portfolio URL live with deployed artifacts + this rulebook + certs
- 3 written memos done (the async-comms proof)
- One take-home shipped with tests + written rationale
- Referral paths identified for the top 5 targets
- 3โ5 parallel processes running by week 5
- Band asked, 75th-percentile anchor ready, competing offer in hand before final negotiation
- Signed remote/global offer โ offer letter reviewed โ notice served cleanly
